Coaching as comrades
I'm Willis, a founder and dad based in Singapore. I spent 16 years building Tech in Asia, from 0 to YC to exit. I also coach founders at any stage who want to think through a difficult team or business challenge. We can work through the situation and your options together. ✌️

I keep work to about 10 hours a week so I can be a present dad and husband. Slots are limited.
Who it’s for
I work with founders at any stage. You might be deciding what to build, finding your first customers, or leading an established team through a difficult decision.
You're probably the top person in the company, and there aren't many people you can think out loud with. You can bring a people decision, a question about the business, or a situation you haven't quite made sense of yet.
I’m probably not a fit if you’re looking for someone to make the decisions for you.
What we can work on
- Leading people through hard stretches, including layoffs and burnout. There’s no such thing as a perfect layoffA letter to founders who are burning out
- Deciding which idea or direction to pursue. Mission-driven founders
- Finding the root cause of a problem. My debugging process
- Building a first version of your product without overspending. The boring ways I use AI
- Getting your first customers. A founder asked me to review her user interview Qs. Read my notes on user interviews and usability tests.
- Product, design, go-to-market plans, and business development. What I did at TIA
A bit about me
Tech in Asia was part of YC’s Winter 2015 batch and was acquired by SPH Media in January 2024.
I made a lot of mistakes along the way at Tech in Asia. If I did it all again, I’d do it just kinder.
These days I’m building stuff at Slothware Labs (opens in a new tab), angel investing a little, and spending lots of time at home with my 3 kiddos.
After my 9-day silent meditation retreat, a few things got clearer. One of them: I really enjoy helping founders get unstuck. I didn’t use to. Now it sparks joy.

Le Yi (opens in a new tab) “I’ve had the chance to be advised by Willis, and what stands out most is how much time he spends understanding you before offering anything. He asks sharp questions about where you are as a founder, why you’re doing what you’re doing, and what actually drives you. He’s been a founder for over a decade and exited his company through a significant acquisition, but there’s zero ego in how he shows up. He’s down to earth and genuinely generous with what he’s learned.
He also doesn’t sugarcoat. He’ll name the elephant in the room and tell you what you need to hear, not what’s comfortable. That’s rarer than it sounds.
For me, the biggest shift was how I approach customers. I used to come at it purely from a sales angle. Willis pushed me to actually understand how my customers think, and taught me the mechanics behind real user interviews. That changed how I run my business.”

Siva (opens in a new tab) “Willis has been there, done that for some of the biggest founder milestones in this part of the world. When I reached out with a cold DM, I never expected him to show up like he'd known me for years.
He's given me hours sitting through the hopes and fears that come with building something from scratch, with specific and direct advice I could act on the same day. We've also gone deep into meaning, purpose, and what you're really building and why. That combination of heart and sharpness is rare, especially from someone who has been in rooms I'd pay to be a fly on the wall.
If you're a founder looking for someone who genuinely cares, do yourself a favor and find time on Willis' calendar.”

Jon (opens in a new tab) “Willis is a great mentor and one of the few people who consistently shows up, both when things are going well and when they are not.
He has sharp, astute thinking, but what I value most is that he balances conviction with a clear understanding of what he does and doesn’t know. That makes his advice unusually practical.
Building a durable technology business is hard, especially in Asia. If you are a founder looking for someone who understands the realities of building, operating, and navigating the region, Willis is someone I would strongly recommend having in your corner.”
-
Daniel (opens in a new tab) “Willis brings a rare mix of real Warrior energy (drive, focus and ruthless prioritization) which he pairs with deep care for his people. He wants to hear the truth, and asks why you think what you think. Working with him, I learned a lot about building culture.
He has seen a lot over the last 20 years and is candid about what he's still learning. That honesty is what makes him a good coach for founders. I definitely recommend him.”
-
Yao Ming (opens in a new tab) “Willis mentored me on multiple aspects on business, ranging from fundraising advice to management to ecosystem. He understood and pointed out cracks in my business just from a quick chat. Conversing with him will make u realise how raw and real he is with you.
He knows the startup scene far beyond my expertise inside and out and genuinely wants founders to win. Every conversation with Willis is always enlightening. Sharp mind, blunt words with unrelenting capacity, I'm glad he is on my side.”

FAQ
Is this suitable if I'm leading my first team?
Yes. I coach founders at any stage, including those leading their first team. Bring a situation you're unsure how to handle, such as giving difficult feedback or deciding what your team should focus on. We'll work through it together; you own the decision.
What kinds of difficult people decisions can we work through?
We can discuss a strained working relationship, a conversation you're avoiding, or how to lead through layoffs and exhaustion. My account of Tech in Asia's 2018 layoff gives you a sense of the experience I bring and the mistakes I've made.
What happens during a session?
We work through the challenge you bring, the context, and what you've tried. Sometimes that means finding the actual problem first. I can share examples from my experience or help draft a plan. You decide what to do next.
How do we arrange a session?
Send me a note and I'll reply by email. We can arrange a session on Google Meet or meet in person, depending on what works for both of us. We'll agree the format, duration, fee, and time before booking. You can also book through Intro (opens in a new tab) if you prefer.
I only have an idea. Is it too early?
No. We can work through what to build, who it's for, and how to test it before you spend too much time or money.
When should I send a note rather than book?
Start with a note to talk about your situation, check whether we're a fit, or arrange a session directly. A few sentences about what you're building and where you're stuck will do. Read my user guide to get a feel for how I think. Intro (opens in a new tab) is an optional booking route.
What should I prepare?
Bring a challenge, the context, and what you've tried. For a team decision, it helps to describe who's affected, what makes the decision hard, and the options you're considering. Missing data, strong emotions, or a problem you can't quite name are okay. We can start there.
What if I can't quite name the problem yet?
That's okay. Tell me what's happening and what you've tried. Sometimes the first job is to figure out what the actual problem is. We can start there.
What does “comrades” mean?
We work through challenges together, on equal footing. I’m friendly and candid, and open to your feedback too. More about me in my user guide.
What if I disagree with your advice?
Tell me candidly. We will figure it out.
What will I leave with?
A clearer sense of your options and where to go next. I can share concrete examples or help draft a plan. You own the decisions and execution.
Is what we discuss confidential?
Yes. I treat everything we discuss as private and confidential.
Can we work together on an ongoing basis?
Yes. Ongoing sessions are possible, and I'll apply a discount. We can discuss the details.
Can I cancel or get a refund?
For sessions booked through Intro, Intro's cancellation policy (opens in a new tab) applies. If you arrange a session directly with me, you can cancel any time before it starts. You can also request a full refund within 3 days after the session.
